If you’re familiar with SEO, you must have heard of the phrase “On-page and Off-page SEO techniques“. Most bloggers are always confused when they come across these phrases.

But in this post, I’ll explain what both of them means and the main On-page SEO tips you should use on your blog or website especially when you’re writing blog posts.

But first, let us know what search engine optimization means.

‍What is Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

According to Wikipedia, Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of affecting the online visibility of a website or a web page in a web search engine’s unpaid results — often referred to as “natural”, “organic”, or “earned” results.

In general, the earlier (or higher ranked on the search results page), and more frequently a website appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine’s users; these visitors can then be converted into customers.

What is Off-page SEO techniques and why is it important?

Offpage SEO is referred to all the SEO practices that take place outside of your website such as backlinks, link relevancy, social signals, and so on.

Most importantly, quality links that point to your blog can help boost your blog search engine ranking.  I will be telling you more about backlinks in my forthcoming post or you can check my previous post about ” Things that hurt SEO“.

You may find that there are thousands of similar articles on the same topic you wrote.

You may wonder how your article will beat them all and become number one on Google.

The answer is, you have to optimize your article by following all key SEO checklists.

Every search engine is nothing but a system that continuously scans various website and blogs and measures them with different parameters and then accordingly ranks them on their SERP

As a blogger, you should know the metrics which actually impact search engine ranking positions and then configure your article accordingly.

Though it doesn’t mean that if you follow all the metrics, you will achieve the first position in Google. Even if you achieve the first position, someone may write a better SEO optimized content that may beat your ranking position.

That means you have to make your article SEO optimized and always re-optimize your articles to keep your ranking well.

Importance of On-page SEO:

  1. On-page SEO helps boost your blog search engine ranking.
  2. On-page SEO increases your website’s page authority.

Main On-Page SEO Techniques for Better Search Engine Ranking

In this article, I will try to focus on the main on-page SEO techniques which can increase the chance of ranking your article better on the Google SERPs which you can follow.

These are in fact the basic on-page SEO techniques which will not take much time to apply; in fact, when you want to apply them, you can easily apply all such basic on-page techniques while preparing your article.

1. Brainstorming or Keyword Research:

Keyword research is the most essential part of writing any online content. Whenever you want to write an article, you should know which search queries or keywords you would like people to get your article.

You may use the Google Keyword Planner tool or keywordtool.io for getting a keyword for your post. So, the placement of keywords within the content is very crucial.

Positions to place keywords in your blog posts

Make sure you put the main keyword phrase in;

  1. Post or page title
  2. permalink
  3. first paragraph
  4. Meta description
  5. And in any of the tags (H2, H3, etc.).

2. Look for Related Search Terms

When you are preparing your content on a specific keyword, you have to make sure that all the related searches or queries related to the main keyword are also included in the content to make the article more useful and informative.

This will help your article to rank better, and readers may find it more useful. In this article, I talked about “related search Terms” otherwise known as Latent Semantic Indexing.

3. Clean URL Structure:

I have noticed many beginners like to put every possible keyword term in the article SLUG or URL to improve the chance of ranking better.

Some don’t even know the benefit of a clean URL structure. Most newbies use the default post title URL slug with is always lengthy.

Others use months and postdate in their post URL slug. But the fact is, it will make things uglier. It is always better to make the URL short and clearly picture the aim of the post body.

For instance, I kept the URL of this article as simple as “ultimate SEO tips.” So, just try to add only the keyword in the URL of your post, it will be a better method for ranking.

4. Page Title:

The page title plays a huge role when we talk about ranking your content. Try to create a catchy title including the main keyword in it.

If possible, put the main keyword at the beginning of the post or page title, but don’t force the keyword in the beginning just for the sake of ranking benefit.

There are few WordPress plugins with which one can easily get catchy article title suggestions. Sometimes a page title becomes a query and becomes a reason for better ranking.

But always take note that your title doesn’t mislead people in the sense that the title doesn’t correspond with the post body.

5. Meta Description:

Although Google has recently changed its algorithm many times, the concept of Meta description is still static and unchanged.

A proper Meta description will always give a better signal to the crawler to rank your article and also help to increase Click through rates.

So, make sure you provide a good and meaningful Meta description covering the main keywords naturally.

6. Content-Length:

Gone are the days when a short article was able to rank better.

Before now, you can write a 300 words article, build backlinks for it and you may have higher chances to rank on search engines.

But from 2016, search engines (especially Google) gives more priority to detailed & useful content which actually explain every aspect of a topic to the user.

Make sure you write your blog post with enough detail and more than 1000+ words. From my study, my blog post with 1000+ words and more detailed information about the topic rank better compared to a shorter article with less information.

It is because the content is still an important part of SEO and will be for years. Like most people will say “Content is the King“. But in some cases, the length of the post can help you to get a good ranking to your post.

7. Interlinking Other Pages:

Interlinking blog post within your article is a very good way to build quality links to your old blog posts from your content itself. Try to link the same article with various long-tail keyword-rich anchor text to improve the post search ranking.

Interlinking may help you in lowering your website Bounce rate too, and it’s a great factor to improve website search engines ranking

8. Reference article:

Providing Nofollow external link to relevant and related content is a new SEO practice which has very good on-page SEO value.

You might have noticed that at the beginning of this article I have provided Google and Wikipedia page reference in this article itself to provide the user with a good source of information, in case the user wants to know more about that term.

But always make sure you give only Nofollow links to the source (website) when you mention or reference any external website.

The reason is that it will help to maintain your website Domain Authority.

9. Add Visuals (Video) if Possible:

A recent study has shown that posts with video and infographics rank higher on search engines than blog posts with just text alone.

You can add videos, image (very mandatory) to your post if you want your article to rank higher on search engines.

10. An Image with alt tag:

Finally, make sure you put an image relevant to your article. Put a description and alt tag covering the main keyword of the article.
